Digital X-Rays Q & A

by Sasan Massachi, MD

What are digital x-rays?

Digital x-rays are much the same as traditional x-rays, at least in terms of the images they provide. However, unlike traditional x-rays they use less radiation and they're also faster and more efficient. That's because they eliminate the use of regular film, relying instead on an electronic receptor plate to detect and “grab” the image. Once the receptor has been exposed, the image is processed immediately by the x-ray's internal processing unit and then deleted from the receptor in just a few seconds, allowing the receptor to be reused. In a traditional x-ray, the film cassette must be removed and placed in a chemical processing unit, and then a new plate must be inserted before the next image can be made.

How are digital x-rays used in managing my health?

Digital x-rays can be used to provide your doctor with a detailed view of your bones, organs and other structures, aiding in both the diagnosis of disease or injury like fractures as well as the management of certain types of health conditions. You may have had digital x-rays at your dentist office, where they've been in use for years. Integration in medical labs has been a little slower, but Dr. Massachi offers state-of-the-art digital x-ray technology for all his patients who require x-rays.

What's involved in a digital x-ray procedure?

The procedure itself is the same as any other x-ray procedure, only usually faster. You'll be asked to stand or sit in a position that allows the image to be made, and the technician will provide you with additional instructions to help get the best image possible. You may be asked to wear a gown and remove any jewelry prior to your x-ray. Most x-rays take only moments to perform.
